On 4th April 2005, water experts from Germany and especially from Southern, Central and Eastern Europe gathered at the first European Forum Water in Magdeburg, Germany.
75 participants from nine nations (Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, Hungary, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia) met to discuss the following topics during the inaugural event of the European Forum Water, a day before commencement of wat 2005. The speeches were translated simultaneously into five languages.
- Cross-frontier strategies in water supply
- EU drinking water directive - implementation and call for action
- Financing possibilities for a secure water supply in Europe
- Technical self-regulation as the motor of European water supplies and wastewater disposal
- Standardization strategies
- Water research
The conference was initialised by the DVGW, modeled on the successful European Forum Gas and presented by five additional German-speaking associations of the European water sector (BGW, DWA, figawa, ÖVGW, SVGW). In continuative conversations during breaks and the evening reception, new partners were successfully acquired. The participants agreed that the cross-frontier exchange of information in a coalescing Europe is steadily gaining in importance. In future, the European Forum Water could set the stage to discuss problems concerning this specific trade. The next European Forum Water will be arranged with representatives of the cooperating organisations and is scheduled for 3. - 7. April 2006, in the context of WASSER BERLIN next year.
