The DVGW is the German member organisation of the IGU, and traditionally controls one of the working committees in its capacity as representative association of one of the ten largest countries with a gas industry. The DVGW is in charge of the secretariat of the IGU Chair and is also represented in top committees such as the IGU Council. The DVGW plays an active part in determining the technical contents of the programme for the tri-annual World Gas Congress.
Within the IWA - a merger of IWSA and IAWQ -, a DVGW executive board member represents the DVGW in the newly-founded IWA Deutsches Nationales Komitee (German National Committee). Being in charge of the association's business management, the DVGW was responsible for preparing and organising the 23rd International Congress in Berlin in October 2001 that had as a motto "Efficient Water Management - Making it happen". 2,500 water experts from over 90 countries experienced a top-class international congress together with a special water trade fair.
