The determination to make things better is the driving force behind all the research and development activities of the DVGW. The objective is to transfer the results of research work to products and processes which maintain the leading international position of the German gas and water industry. Safety, hygiene and environmental protection are the top priorities. The benefits are twofold. Firstly, gas and water companies are supported in their efforts to maintain the highest possible levels of safety despite growing competition. Secondly, reliable, high-performance gas and water supplies are a key location factor for Germany in competition with other countries.
The DVGW research effort is organized as a network including not only the DVGW Water Technology Centre and the two DVGW research institutes at the University of Karlsruhe (Engler-Bunte Institute) and the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg but also the other institutions with which DVGW cooperates for specific projects. Projects are increasingly organized as a joint effort allowing each of the institutes involved to make the most effective contribution possible. This network approach has also been adopted at the European level. Through its membership in GERG, the European Gas Research Group, the DVGW has access to research partners from 11 European countries.

In 2007, the DVGW’s cooperation with affiliated and external research institutes brought numerous important projects to a close. The focus was in particular on the fields of gas application technology and water protection, both under the lead aspect of climate protection. Research into the safety and maintenance of gas networks also remained an important topic in view of the ongoing regulation and unbundling in the gas industry.
