News on the DVGW Technical Rules - Gas

New publications

G 5305-2 draft "Gas excess flow valves for gas supply lines"
Publication date 9/11, EUR 27.61 (DVGW members), EUR 36.82 (non-members), available in German only

The Technical Committee "Components and auxiliary materials - Gas" has decided to transpose the Preliminary Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices 305-2 in accordance with the internal rules of procedure GW 100 into Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices G 5305-2. In the course of this process, an adaptation the current structure of the system of rules and an editorial adaptation of the certification-relevant text passages were made. In addition, references to the system of rules were updated.

The excess flow valves according to G 5305-2 lock the gas supply for the downstream line system, if the stipulated shut-off flow is exceeded, e.g. due to a mechanically-induced leakage (excavator attack) with sufficiently high opening cross section.

These technical requirements for the testing and approval of devices apply for requirements and testing of gas excess flow valves up to a nominal width of DN 50 with defined flow direction. They are operated with gases according to DVGW Code of Practice G 260 (but not with liquefied petroleum gas in the liquid phase). According to their operating pressure range they are divided into types A (15 mbar to 100 mbar), B (0.1 bar to 5 bar), C (25 mbar to 5 bar) and D (25 mbar to 1 bar).

Objection period ends on 30/12/2011.

G 5614 Draft "Permanent pipe joints for metal gas lines; press connectors"
Publication date 9/11, EUR 20.59 (DVGW members), EUR 27.45 (non-members), available in German only

The Technical Committee "Components and auxiliary materials - Gas" has decided to convert the VP 614 in accordance with the internal rules of procedure GW 100 into Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices G 5614. Within the scope of conversion, an adaptation to the current structure of the system of rules and an editorial adaptation of the text passages that are relevant to certification was made. In addition, references to the system of rules were updated.

These technical requirements for the testing and approval of devices apply for requirements on and testing of metal press connectors for connecting pipes and pipeline components made of metallic materials, which form a metal-to-metal or non-metal seal against smooth walls. The technical requirements for the testing and approval of devices do not apply to press connectors that are used for buried lines. The press connectors must be suitable for lines which are operated with gases according to DVGW Code of Practice G 260.

These technical requirements for the testing and approval of devices apply for press connectors, which are used in gas pipelines with an outside pipe diameter of d≤ 108 mm and up to nominal pressures of 5 bar (PN 1 or PN 5). For the application range of the interior gas lines according to DVGW Code of Practice G 600 (TRGI) and TRF, they must be resistant against an increased thermal load.

Objection period ends on 30/12/2011

G 5634 Draft "Safety seals for gas installations"
Publication date 9/11, EUR 20.59 (DVGW members), EUR 27.45 (non-members), available in German only

The Technical Committee "Components and auxiliary materials - Gas" has decided to transpose the Preliminary Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices 634 in accordance with the internal rules of procedure GW 100 into Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices G 5634. In the course of this process, an adaptation to the current structure of the system of rules and an editorial adaptation of the text passages that are relevant to certification were made. In addition, references to the system of rules were updated, red brass materials were adapted to European and international standards and the sealing material according to DIN EN 682 was deleted.

As passive measure to impede manipulative interventions in the gas installation, DVGW Code of Practice G 600 (TRGI) refers to the use of safety seals, among other things. These are plugs/caps as safekeeping devices on line ends, which can only be opened with special tools.

These Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices apply to the requirements on and the testing of single- or multi-part safety seals coming in contact with gas (such as safety plugs, safety caps or a system) in gas installations according to DVGW-G 600 (TRGI) and TRF up to a nominal width of DN 50 (thread size 2) and a nominal pressure of 5 bar. They come at least partly in contact with gases according to DVGW Code of Practice G 260 (but not with liquefied petroleum gas in the liquid phase). Safety devices not coming into contact with gas can also be assessed and certified according to these Technical Requirements for the Testing and Approval of Devices.

Objection period ends on 30/12/2011

News on the DVGW Technical Rules - Gas/Water

New publications

GW 335-B3 "Plastic pipeline systems in gas and water distribution - Part B3: Mechanical connectors for water distribution made from synthetic materials (POM, PP)"
Publication date 9/11, EUR 20.59 (DVGW members), EUR 27.45 (non-members)

The draft version of September 2010 is based on the materials POM (polyoxymethylene) and PP (polypropylene). Some objections aimed at taking into consideration further materials such as PE (polyethylene) and PA GF (glass-fibre reinforced polyamide), which are neither contained in DVGW VP 609 (precursor of GW 335-B3) nor in ISO 14236 (basis for GW 335-B3). Thus the question to what extent the requirements profile of GW 335-B3 is suitable for other materials, i.e. whether the plain supplementation of the material-specific tables will be sufficient, could not be resolved within the scope of the discussion of comments.

The responsible technical committee of the DVGW has also rejected an opening clause for additional materials, as they would de facto grant the competing testing/certification bodies the competence of establishing regulations and the manner in which an opening clause could be applied would ultimately be difficult to foresee.

In the end, the draft of GW 335-B3 dated September 2010 was confirmed, apart from smaller corrections. The materials that were not taken into account will have to be dealt with within the scope of a supplementary establishment of regulations.

News on the DVGW Technical Rules - Water

New publications

W 235-3 draft version, "Centralised softening in the drinking water supply - ion exchange method"
Publication date 9/11, EUR 27.61 (DVGW members), EUR 36.82 (non-members), available in German only

This Code of Practice was revised by the Project Group on "Membrane and fine filtration" within the Technical Committee "Water treatment methods" and expanded by a chapter dealing with the performance of integrity tests. It applies to the elimination of particles while processing water into drinking water by means of membrane filtration (ultra and micro filtration). It explains the specific terms, the rinsing and cleaning methods as well as the factors influencing operation, the knowledge of which is necessary for planning, operation, monitoring and servicing membrane filtration systems in drinking water treatment.
Plant specific details, which do not influence the process step membrane filtration, are not subject of this code of practice.
